Passiflora morifolia (sometimes referred to as Maulbeerblättrige passion flower or Maulbeerbaumblättrige passion flower referred to) is a plant - type from the 460 species comprising the genus of the passion flower ( Passiflora ), of the largest genus within the passifloraceae (Passifloraceae).
description
Passiflora morifolia is a perennial climbing plant that can reach a height of 12 m. The slightly hairy leaves are three to five lobed, usually 3.5 to 10 cm long, serrated to toothed and are somewhat reminiscent of mulberry leaves (hence the species name: Latin morifolius = mulberry- leaved ).
The flowers are of a diameter between 2.5 and 3.5 cm, compared to many other species representatives relatively small. The white petals surround a single row of white rays, which has a wide purple-violet zone. As is usual with passion flowers, the reproductive organs (five stamens and three stigmas ) are grouped as an androgynophore to form a column that protrudes far beyond the flower envelope .
Since the flowers are self-fertile, blue-violet fruits are regularly formed, which are strongly reminiscent of plums in shape and size (up to about 4 cm in length) , but are not considered edible. The seeds inside are surrounded by an intense orange-red aril tissue.
distribution
The main distribution of Passiflora morifolia is in Bolivia , Argentina , Paraguay and the bordering Brazil . Individual occurrences are also in Guatemala , Venezuela , Colombia , Ecuador and Peru .
Others
Passiflora morifolia is often cultivated in butterfly houses because it is a very suitable food plant for many caterpillars of the Heliconius genus . Because of its relatively low demands, it can also be kept in the room .
