Pat Irwin

Patrick Irwin (born May 17, 1955 ) is an American composer and musician .

Irwin attended the Tisch School of the Arts until 1977 . As a recipient of a Thomas J. Watson scholarship , he then went to Paris to write about American jazz musicians who had emigrated there. In Paris he attended composition workshops with John Cage and wrote a musical with William S. Burroughs , which was lost.

In 1979 he returned to the USA and formed two bands in New York , The Raybeats (with George Scott , Don Christensen and Jody Harris from the Contortions ) and Eight Eyed Spy (with Lydia Lunch and Jim Sclavunos from Teenage Jesus ) - one role played in No Wave . From 1989 to 2008 he was a member of the group The B-52s . He is currently performing with the PI Power Trio (with Sasha Dobson and Daria Grace ) and the group SUSS and is active in the Music For Electric Guitar and Piano project.

As a composer, Irwin was best known for his music for cartoon series such as Rocko's Modern Life , Pepper Ann and Class of 3000 . For his music for the SpongeBob SquarePants series , he received the ASCAP Film & Television Awards in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 . He has also composed music for television series (including Feed the Beast , Nurse Jackie , Bored to Death ), independent films ( But I'm A Cheerleader , My New Gun , Bam Bam And Celeste ) and the documentary Fall To Grace . The Grinnell College awarded him in 2012 of an honorary doctorate. Irwin teaches film music composition at the Tisch School of the Arts and Brooklyn College .
