Patricia Edwina Victoria Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma , CBE , CD (born February 14, 1924 in London , † June 13, 2017 in Mersham , Kent ) was a British noblewoman .

Life

Patricia Mountbatten was born the eldest daughter of Lord Louis Mountbatten and his wife Edwina . She has a sister, Lady Pamela Hicks . Since her mother was the chief heir to Sir Ernest Cassel , the family was extraordinarily wealthy. She went to school in Malta, England and New York.

During the Second World War , her father was a famous destroyer commander in the Royal Navy . He rose to become Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces in Southeast Asia. Patricia initially served in the Women's Royal Naval Service in Great Britain and from 1945 as an officer in her father's headquarters.

There she met her future husband John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne , who was her father's adjutant at the time . In 1946 they were married at Romsey Abbey , Hampshire , near the family's country estate, Broadlands . Her husband was later a well-known film producer .

The marriage resulted in a total of eight children:

  • Nicholas Timothy Charles Knatchbull (1964–1979), twin brother of Timothy Nicholas Sean, killed at the age of 14 by an IRA bomb together with his grandfather.

The Countess was active in a variety of charities, such as SOS Children's Villages Great Britain, of which she was the patron , and in the British branch of the Order of St. John .

Since 1974 she has been Colonel of Honor of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry , one of the most highly decorated regiments in the Canadian Armed Forces .

Lady Patricia was on the boat that was blown up by an IRA bomb in Sligo Bay , Ireland on August 27, 1979 . Her father, her youngest son Nicholas, her mother-in-law and a boy who helped on the boat died. She, her husband and their son Timothy survived the attack with injuries.

The Countess, like her father, was very close to the British royal family . The Duke of Edinburgh is her cousin. She herself was 440th in line to the British throne .

Nobility title

After her father was raised to Viscount Mountbatten of Burma on August 23, 1946 , she used the courtesy address The Honorable as his daughter .

After her marriage to the 7th Baron Brabourne on October 26, 1946, she carried the courtesy title of Lady Brabourne as his wife .

When her father's death on 27 August 1979, she inherited suo iure whose peerage as 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma , the second Viscountess Mountbatten of Burma and 2nd Baroness Romsey . All three titles were bestowed on their father with the special addition that in the absence of male offspring they could also be passed on to his daughters. Because of this independent title, she was a member of the House of Lords until the reform of 1999 .
