Patrick Joseph Cardinal O'Donnell (born November 28, 1856 in Kilraine near Glenties , County Donegal , Ireland , † October 22, 1927 in Carlingford , County Louth ) was Archbishop of Armagh and Cardinal of the Roman Church.

Life

Patrick Joseph O'Donnell studied at the diocesan seminary in Letterkenny and St. Patrick's College in Maynooth Catholic theology and received on 29 June 1880, the sacrament of the priesthood by the Archbishop of Dublin Edward McCabe . He was then from 1881 to 1888 professor of dogmatics and moral theology at St. Patrick's College in Maynooth. At the age of only 31 he was made Bishop of Raphoe in 1888, he received episcopal ordination by the Archbishop of Armagh and later Cardinal Michael Logue ; Co- consecrators were Francis Kelly , Bishop of Derry , and Patrick MacAlister , Bishop of Down and Connor , and the sermon was delivered by Bartolomew Woodlock , Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise . His motto was In hoc signo vinces (In this sign you will win). In 1922 he was named titular archbishop of Attalea in Pamphylia and coadjutor- archbishop in Armagh and succeeded Cardinal Logue as archbishop after his death in 1924. From 1922 to 1923 he administered his previous diocese of Raphoe as Apostolic Administrator . On December 14, 1925, Pope Pius XI took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria della Pace in the college of cardinals .

Patrick Joseph O'Donnell died on October 22, 1927 and was buried in Saint Patrick's Cemetery in Armagh.
