Paul-André Lemoisne (born February 7, 1875 in Paris ; died June 19, 1964 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French librarian and art historian . His publications include the catalog of works by the painter Edgar Degas .

Life

Paul-André Lemoisne was born the son of a Paris doctor. After finishing school, he moved to the École nationale des chartes and graduated in 1901 with a diplômé archiviste paleographe (diploma from an archivist - paleograph ). From 1901 to 1931 he worked as a librarian at the Bibliothèque nationale de France , where from 1925 he was director of the Cabinet des estampes (Kupferstichkabinett). In addition to his work as a librarian, Lemoisne devoted himself to art history. In 1904 he worked as an assistant to Henri Bouchot and prepared an exhibition on early Renaissance painting in the Louvre . He frequented literary salons and artistic circles. Through the painter Henri Rouart , Lemoisne met his future wife Suzanne - a granddaughter of the graphic artist Paul Gavarni . Lemoisne's direct access to family-owned documents made it easier for him to publish a two-volume biography about Gavarni. He also published the catalog of works by the painter Eugène Louis Lami from 1912 to 1914 . After Lemoisne had already published a biography on Edgar Degas in 1912, he submitted the catalog of works on Degas published in 1946–1949, a standard work that is still valid today.
