Paul Bayes

Paul Bayes (born November 2, 1953 in Bradford , Yorkshire ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Liverpool in the Church of England since 2014 .

Life

Bayes studied theater studies ( drama ) at the University of Birmingham . There he graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's degree . In preparation for the priesthood he attended Queen's College in Edgbaston , Birmingham .

In 1979 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1980 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1979 to 1982 as vicar ( curate ) at St Paul's Church, Cullercoats (official title) in Whitley Bay , North Tyneside in the Diocese of Newcastle . From 1982 to 1987 he worked as a University Chaplain in the West-London-Chaplaincy in the Diocese of London , first at Queen Elizabeth College (1982-1987), then at the Chelsea College of Art and Design (1985-1987) .

From 1987 to 1990 he was then pastor ( Team Vicar ) in High Wycombe in the Diocese of Oxford , and later from 1990 to 1994 as the so-called "Team Rector". From 1995 to 2004 he was pastor of Totton in the diocese of Winchester , also as so-called "Team Rector". During this time he was also Dean ( Area Dean ) of Lyndhurst from 2000 to 2004 . From 2004 to 2010 he was a member of the staff of the Archbishops' Council until he was raised to the bishopric as a "National Mission and Evangelism Adviser". As part of his activity, he traveled to large parts of Great Britain to preach the Christian message of salvation. Bayes also played an important role in the Church of England's Weddings Project, which aims to promote church weddings. In 2007 he was Ehrenkanoniker ( Honorary Canon , Canon) of Worcester Cathedral ; he also held this office until his episcopal ordination.

In July 2010 his appointment as "Bishop of Hertford" as suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of St Albans in the Church of England was announced. In this capacity he succeeded Christopher Foster , who had been named Bishop of Portsmouth , succeeding Kenneth Stevenson . He was ordained bishop on September 21, 2010 at St Paul's Cathedral . His inauguration and enthronement as "Bishop of Hertford" took place on October 25, 2010 in St Albans Cathedral .

In May 2014, his appointment as the 8th Bishop of Liverpool was announced. He succeeded James Stuart Jones , who retired in August 2013. On July 23, 2014, his election was formally confirmed (Confirmation of Election) by John Sentamu , Archbishop of York , during a service in York Minster . His inauguration and enthronement as Bishop of Liverpool took place on November 15, 2014 at Liverpool Cathedral .

Family and private

Paul Bayes has been married to Katharine Soley since 1976. His wife, Kate, is an acting teacher and lay preacher . The marriage resulted in three children, now grown up, two daughters and a son.

His hobbies include walking , reading , laughing and having conversations . Bayes is a fan of modern communication tools. He owns an iPad and has a Twitter account @paulbayes. The aim of his church work is to combine the Christian faith and popular culture .
