Misunderstood (Original title: Incompresa ) is an Italian-French drama by Asia Argento . The film was shown in 2014 in the section “Un Certain regard” at the International Film Festival in Cannes . The German premiere took place at the Hamburg Film Festival . The German theatrical release was January 22, 2015.

Aria sees herself as the loneliest girl in Rome. As the youngest daughter of her neurotic artist parents, she grows up in chaotic circumstances. Her mother is a self-centered pianist who has occasional affairs. Her father is a self-loving movie star with superstitious tendencies. In a marital war, the two parents lost sight of their nine-year-old daughter. While her two half-sisters Lucrezia and Donatina are showered with love, Aria is pushed back and forth like an unloved piece of furniture. Even in school, Aria, despite her self-confidence, is a victim of taunts and a lack of recognition. Her crush doesn't want to know anything about her and her best friend has no idea of the disastrous conditions in her family. Rejected and deported, Aria wanders through the city and gives her love to a black street cat.

The German film critics received the film benevolently and positively. The film service judged that the film was an "exhaustive, consistently fragmented emotional carousel as sometimes anarchically erratic, sometimes satirical-affirmative reckoning with a narcissistic generation". The film juggles with “extravagant camera angles” and “perfectly captures the chaotic, undercooled zeitgeist of the 1980s in the soundtrack”. The film magazine epd Film said that Asia Argento was “not about touching children's stories”. You tell "the genre story of the 'poor rich child' as a social satire again".
