Christopher Foster

Christopher Richard James Foster (born November 7, 1953 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Portsmouth in the Church of England since February 2010 .

Life

Foster grew up in the industrial region of the West Midlands and in Surrey . He studied Economics ( Economics ) at the University of Durham and the University of Manchester . He graduated with a Master of Arts . He then worked briefly from 1976 to 1977 as a lecturer in economics at the University of Durham. He then studied theology at Westcott House Theological College at Cambridge University .

In 1980 he was ordained a deacon . In 1981 he was ordained a priest . From 1980 to 1982 he was Vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in the Tettenhall Regis district in the Wolverhampton Deanery in the Diocese of Lichfield . From 1982 to 1986 he was chaplain ( Chaplain ) on Wadman College of Oxford University . At the same time he was vicar at the University Church of Saint Mary, with responsibility also for the parishes of Saint Cross and Saint Peter, in Oxford . In 1986 he became a pastor ( curate ) in Southgate in north London . He held this church office until 1994. At the same time he was Continuing Ministerial Education Officer for the Episcopal Ecclesiastical District Edmonton , in north London, until 1994 . In 1994 he joined as Vice-Dean ( Sub-Dean ) and Residenzkanoniker ( residentiary Canon ) to the St Albans Cathedral ( Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban ) in Hertfordshire .

In 2001 he was named suffragan bishop of Hertford . From 2007 to 2010 he was Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee of the University of Hertfordshire . In February 2010 he was named Bishop of Portsmouth to succeed Kenneth Stevenson .

Membership in the House of Lords

On January 7, 2014 Foster was in his capacity as bishop of Portsmouth to the principle of seniority as the next most senior bishop of the Church of England as minister Lord member of the House of Lords . He was officially inducted into the House of Lords on February 6, 2014, with the assistance of Peter Robert Forster , Bishop of Chester , and Stephen Platten , Bishop of Wakefield.

Private

Foster is married to Sally Foster for the second time. His first wife Julia died in 2001. He is the father of two grown children (one son, one daughter) from his first marriage. Foster is very interested in current issues in politics and economics . His leisure activities and hobbies include attending entertainment events, visiting Shropshire and being passionate about the Wolverhampton Wanderers .
