Paul Biegel (born March 25, 1925 in Bussum , North Holland Province , Netherlands , † October 21, 2006 in Laren , Netherlands) was a Dutch children's author .

Life

Biegel grew up as the youngest of a total of nine children, six girls and three boys. He was not an avid bookworm and preferred to play outside the house. Nonetheless, his favorite readings were Grimm's fairy tales and books by Jules Verne . He attended elementary school in Bussum and graduated from high school in Amsterdam in 1945 .

Biegel wrote his first story The Dissatisfied Dwarf at the age of 14. It was published in the De Tijd newspaper. He could not fulfill his dream career because he realized that he did not have enough talent for the piano. After the Second World War he went to the United States for a year , where he worked for The Knickerbocker Weekly magazine . After returning to the Netherlands, he wrote for various magazines and began studying law at the University of Amsterdam , which he broke off in 1954.

In the following years Biegel wrote comics , for example Minter and Hinter , which, divided into a total of 10 stories, appeared in 5479 episodes in the daily newspaper Het Vrije Volk . In 1959 he began working as a comic book writer in Marten Toonder's studio for the series Kappies .

The first book that Biegel published was De gouden gitar (The Golden Guitar) in 1962 . He had been married to Marijke Sträter since 1960. The couple had two children. After his marriage failed, Biegel publicly confessed that he was homosexual.

His more than 50 books have been published in a dozen languages.

Biegel was made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1996
