Paul Bode (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Bode (born April 5, 1903 in Kassel ; † January 16, 1978 there ) was a German architect .

Life

Paul Bode was the second eldest son of Johanna and Nikolaus Bode. The parents of the brothers Arnold, Paul, Theo (* 1905) and Egon came from Eichsfeld and ran a carpentry business in Kassel that specialized in interior fittings (later also the manufacture of chairs, especially those designed by the Bode sons). Arnold Bode (1900–1977), his older brother, was the later founder of the documenta .

Paul Bode studied architecture and for many years ran an architecture office in Kassel (among others) together with his younger brother Theo and the architect Ernst Brundig.

Paul Bode is considered an important post-war architect for meeting places, cinemas and cinemas , cafes, restaurants, residential buildings, but also parking garages and other functional buildings. In 1957 he wrote a standard work on the construction of cinemas and movie theaters. His film palaces (primarily for the Georg Reiss film theater company ) in Kassel, Mannheim , Nuremberg , Hanover and other cities served as models for the construction of the cinemas of that time. Bode aimed to abolish the separation of auditorium and stage, this was achieved through spatial and lighting effects. The magazine Der Spiegel described its cinemas as contrary to the trend of building cheap cinemas. Many of his buildings had a decisive influence on the reconstruction of his hometown Kassel.

Paul Bode also designed furniture, for example the famous "spring wood chairs" (together with Arnold Bode), which were produced from 1950 to 1975 - awarded with international design awards.
