Coutts (37 league games) quickly became a regular player in Football League One in 2008/09 and achieved promotion to the second division with the team trained by Darren Ferguson as runner- up in the table. The season in the Football League Championship 2009/10 he spent until his premature change of club in the relegation battle.

Preston North End and Derby County

On February 1, 2010, Coutts was signed by the English second division club Preston North End . Preston had signed Darren Ferguson, who was dismissed in Peterborough on November 29, 2009, as the new coach a month earlier . After relegation achieved at the end of the season, Paul Coutts (23 league games / 1 goal) rose in 2010/11 with his team as third from bottom in Football League One . In the 2011/12 season, the club clearly missed promotion.

On July 14, 2012, Coutts moved to the English second division Derby County and signed a three-year contract. After the contract expired, he moved to Sheffield United on a free transfer .
