Paul Crawford (jazz musician)

Paul Crawford (born February 16, 1925 in Atmore, Alabama ; † July 31, 1996 in New Orleans ) was an American jazz musician ( trombone , baritone horn ) and music historian .

Paul Crawford studied at the Eastman Conservatory in Rochester (New York) and came to New Orleans in 1951; there he was co-leader of the Crawford-Ferguson Night Owls . The first recordings were made in 1957 with the Lakefront Loungers . He also worked from 1967 with the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra (with whom he played on the soundtrack of the film Pretty Baby (director: Louis Malle , 1978)), the Olympia Brass Band of Harold Dejan and other orchestras. Crawford participated in 55 recording sessions between 1958 and 1991, including a. with Pud Brown , The Raspberry Ragtimers, and Doc Cheatham .

Crawford was associate curator of the Tulane University Jazz Archives and conducted numerous interviews for an oral history of jazz. He died in July 1996 of complications from lung cancer .
