Paul Lehmann-Brauns (born October 23, 1885 near Danzig ; † April 24, 1970 in Berlin ) was a German landscape and industrial painter .

Life

Naming

He was born as Max Felix Paul Lehmann in Neufahrwasser, Danzig's port at the mouth of the Vistula . However, he spent his childhood in Halle (Saale) . In the period from 1899 to 1905 he trained as a primary school teacher in Wandersleben and at the teachers' college in Elsterwerda . He then worked as a teacher in Halle until 1913 and completed further training as a secondary school teacher. In 1913 he moved to Berlin, but was soon called up for military service, which he completed in Russia. He then worked as a teacher in Berlin until 1942.

Since Lehmann was a very common name, he called himself Paul Lehmann-Fahrwasser from 1918 with reference to his place of birth Neufahrwasser. His younger brother Georg , born on February 8, 1887, also became a painter under the same name Lehmann-Fahrwasser. Understandably, this led to confusion, which led Paul to change his stage name to Lehmann-Braunss in 1923. He borrowed the addition Braunss from his mother-in-law's maiden name. In 1930, when the artist name was registered as a family name, the ending double s was not officially permitted and changed to a simple s .

His brother kept the name Georg Lehmann-Fahrwasser as an artist name throughout his life.

First works (watercolors) are signed with PL. The artist name from 1918 to 1923 was Paul Lehmann-Fahrwasser , that from 1923 to 1930 Paul Lehmann-Braunss and from 1930 finally Paul Lehmann-Brauns .

Motifs

For the painter who lives in Berlin , the North Frisian islands formed the focus of his motifs, with the island of Föhr playing a prominent role. In addition to the pictures from North Frisia, which also included many pictures of the Halligen, the following motifs are the focus: industrial landscapes and industrial pictures (mid-1920s), naval pictures , port of Hamburg , Berlin and Potsdam , Giant Mountains , Thuringian Forest and low mountain ranges .
