Paul Luther (born May 18, 1868 in Prenzlau , † March 11, 1954 in Berlin ) was a German politician (DVP).

Life

After attending grammar school in Prenzlau, Luther studied philology and theology in Breslau , Tübingen and Berlin from 1886 to 1889 , where he also received his doctorate . From 1892 to 1895 he officiated as a deacon and author in Kremmen in Osthavelland , then from 1895 to 1901 as senior pastor. In 1901 Luther took over a pastor's office at the Trinitatis Church in Charlottenburg , which he was to hold for almost thirty-two years until 1933. In addition to his duties as parish priest, he also performed pastoral duties in the Westend hospital .

After the end of the First World War , Luther joined the German People's Party (DVP), which formed its political forum during the Weimar Republic . In 1919 he became a city councilor in Charlottenburg. A year later, in 1920, he was elected to the Reichstag for constituency 3 (Potsdam II) , to which he belonged until May 1924. In parliament, he paid particular attention to public welfare and the “moral and religious fight against sexual excess and against prostitution ”.

As a theologian, Luther was involved in the German Protestant Association , of which he was temporarily vice-president. In political and journalistic terms, Luther emerged as the editor of the newspaper Sunday and Everyday Life and as the author of a handbook for popular entertainment entitled Deutsche Volksabende .

His grave is in the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf .
