Paul Merula

Paul Merula (also: Paulus van Merle ; born August 19, 1558 in Dordrecht , † July 20, 1607 in Rostock ) was a Dutch lawyer, historian and geographer.

Life

The son of Willem Merula and Jacoba Heermann had attended school in Dordrecht and Delft . On August 28, 1578 he enrolled at the University of Leiden and attended various universities abroad. In some cases he earned his living as a tutor and vice principal. He had done legal and literary studies with Jacques Cujas in Paris , at the University of Orléans and at the University of Bourges . He had continued this in Geneva, Basel and Strasbourg. In France he called himself Gulielmus Mismetius or Paul Guillaume for fear of anger because of his beliefs. (He was the great-nephew of Angelus Merula .)

In 1587 he worked as a lawyer at the court of Holland and in the following years worked on a manual on civil law, the civiele zaaken enz under the title Manier van procederen in de Provintiën van Holland, Zeeland and West-Vriesland. (Leiden 1592, The Hague 1619, 1631, 1681, Delft 1705, Leiden 1741 and 1784). After Justus Lipsius went to the University of Leuven in 1592, Merula was appointed extraordinary professor of history by the curators of the Leiden University on August 8, 1592, and on October 8, 1593, he took over the full professorship of the subject. At that time he worked on thousands of pieces for a Historia Belgica (History of Belgium), which mainly dealt with the war against the Spaniards and is known as a handwritten bequest.

After he was appointed librarian at the university library in Leiden on February 24, 1597, he was appointed historian of Gelderland on March 20, 1597 and historian of the States General on December 21, 1598. In this capacity he published multi-part historical volumes. In addition to his activities in the field of classical literature, law and history, he also dealt with geography, as evidenced by his Cosmographiae generalis ... which was the first work of importance in this field in the Netherlands. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1602/03 . Due to his professional demands, he fell ill and in 1607 went on a recreational trip to Rostock, where he had relatives and friends. After a stay of two months and about to return to Leiden, he was seized with a heated fever of which he died.

His marriage to Judith Buys, daughter of the Council of States of Holland Bartholomäus Buys Gryphius, has nine children. Of these, the names Jacoba, Willem, Bartholomeus, Angelus, Justina, Jacob, Jacob, Joannes and Jacoba are known. The daughter Justina married the lawyer Anton Woltreich in 1619 .
