Paul S. Otellini (born October 12, 1950 in San Francisco , † October 2, 2017 in Sonoma County , California ) was Intel's fifth chief executive officer from 2005 to 2013 . Otellini was also a member of the Board of Directors of Google Inc.

education

Paul Otellini graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory . He also received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of San Francisco . He received his MBA from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974.

Work for intel

Otellini joined Intel in 1974. From 1998 to 2002 he was Vice President and First Manager of the Intel Architecture Group , responsible for the microprocessor and chipset business and strategies for desktop, mobile and enterprise computing. From 1996 to 1998 Otellini was Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing and from 1994 to 1996 Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sales and Marketing .

Previously, he was the first manager of the Microprocessor Products Group, responsible for the introduction of the Pentium microprocessor in 1993. He was also responsible for the business with IBM , and worked for the then Intel President Andrew Grove . Otellini became Operating Group Vice President in 1988 , became Intel Corporate Officer in 1991, Senior Vice President in 1993 and Executive Vice President in 1996 . In 2002 he was elected to the board of directors and became president and chief operating officer of the company. On May 18, 2005, he finally became Intel's CEO.

In November 2012, Otellini surprisingly announced his retirement from the post of CEO. During his tenure, Intel's sales rose from $ 39 billion to $ 54 billion, but he was unable to position the company in the smartphone and tablet PC market as expected. Nevertheless, its performance was largely rated positively by experts. In May 2013 he handed over the office to Brian Krzanich .

Next life

After retiring from his senior position at Intel, Otellini devoted himself to philanthropic activities and supported institutions such as the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation.

On October 3, 2017, Intel announced that Otellini had died in his sleep the day before. Further details on the cause of death were not given.
