Paul Rebhun also: Partridge, Paulus Perdix; (* around 1505 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs , Lower Austria ; † 1546 in Oelsnitz / Vogtl. ) was a Lutheran pastor, educator and playwright of the 16th century. He is still considered one of the most important German dramatists of the Reformation in Saxony.

Life

Born the son of a red tanner, he came to Saxony as a child; after finishing school he studied at the University of Wittenberg . As a student he also became Martin Luther's housemate. However, since the registers of that time are very incomplete, it cannot be proven there.

In 1526, after his studies, Rebhun got a job as a cantor in Zwickau . In the same year he married Anna Thiel there. In 1529 he was promoted to schoolmaster in Kahla (Thuringia) and was transferred back to Zwickau as a teacher at the Latin school in 1535 . He received his ordination from Martin Luther in 1538 and was first appointed pastor in Plauen . Supported by Luther, he was transferred to Oelsnitz in the same position in 1542. On the advice of Luther and Philipp Melanchthon , he became pastor and superintendent for the Voigtsberg district in Oelsnitz in 1542 . Rebhun held this office until the end of his life. Above all, he appeared as a dramatist, whose works have been published several times. In it he deals with current issues, marriage issues and denounces the abuse of official authority. His works were edited by, among others, Sixt Birck , Jasper von Gennep and Nicodemus Frischlin .
