Sixt (us) Birck (occasionally also Sixtus Birk ; * February 24, 1501 in Augsburg ; † June 19, 1554 ibid) was a German teacher, playwright and hymn poet.

Birck studied theology at the universities in Erfurt , Tübingen (since 1522) and Basel . In Basel he was the head of the Latin school between 1530 and 1536 . In 1538 he became rector of the grammar school at St. Anna in Augsburg. At the same time he was the first librarian of the newly founded city library .

Birck wrote his works under the pseudonym Xystus Betulius (“Betula” Latin for “birch”) and addressed biblical subjects in his dramas, to which he gave contemporary references. His Josephs drama is the first poetic treatment of this material. He is regarded as the founder of the German-language school drama , which later established itself as a genre in Jesuit theater.
