Paul Sabatier (1905)

Charles Paul Marie Sabatier (born August 3, 1858 in Saint-Michel-de-Chabrillanoux ( Département Ardèche ), † March 4, 1928 in Strasbourg ) was a French theologian and historian .

Sabatier, the son of a Protestant pastor, studied at the theological faculty of the Sorbonne in Paris (today's Faculté de théologie protestante de Paris ) and received his bachelor's degree in 1885 . He then became vicar at the Nikolaikirche in Strasbourg . To get a pastor's position he would have had to take German citizenship, but he refused. Instead, he became a pastor in Saint-Cierge-la-Serre in the Ardèche department. After only four years he had to give up the pastor's office for health reasons and has since been engaged in academic studies. In 1919 he was appointed professor to a chair for church history at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Strasbourg , which he held until his death.

Sabatier was a student of Ernest Renan , who moved him to concentrate scientifically on Francis of Assisi . As a result of this suggestion, Sabatier researched and wrote primarily about the history of the Middle Ages and especially about Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan movement that originated from him . His interests met those of the historian Walter Goetz , with whom he had been exchanging letters for decades. Sabatier's Vie de S. Francois D'Assise is considered by many to be the most influential biography of Francis of modern times (German editions under the title Life of St. Francis of Assisi ). In 1894 this book was registered by the Curia in the list of forbidden books , but it appeared in 42 editions in France alone and was successful worldwide in several languages. He founded the Società Internazionale di Studi Francescani in 1902 in Assisi, in London together with Andrew George Little in 1908 the British Society of Franciscan Studies .

Sabatier received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Oxford and he was accepted into the Royal Accademia dei Lincei . He has been an honorary citizen of the Italian city of Assisi since May 7, 1898 .
