Paul Schaffshausen (also Paull , born August 5, 1712 in Hamburg ; † February 15, 1761 ibid) was a German classical philologist , theologian and philosopher .

Life

Schaffshausen was a son of Protonotarius and Council Secretary Nicolaus Lucas Schaffshausen and at the same time a grandson of Hamburg Mayor Johann Diedrich Schaffshausen . Paul Schaffshausen initially received private tuition and then attended the Johanneum School of Academics . In 1731 he finally moved to the local academic high school . After completing this, he moved to the University of Leipzig . Even during his studies he drew attention to himself with smaller published writings. With the Dissertatio philologica de vera notione vocabuli κοινωνία he was awarded the master's degree in 1738. From 1738 to 1740 he was then a lecturer at the Leipzig University and gave lectures on the Greek language and in theological subjects.

When Schaffshausen could foresee that he would initially not be able to obtain a professorship in Leipzig, he went back to Hamburg. There he worked as a private scholar . On August 19, 1745, he was finally appointed full professor of logic, metaphysics and eloquence at the Academic Gymnasium. He was the holder of the chair of theology of the institution and from 1752 until his death also the second librarian .
