Johann Diedrich Schaffshausen (born March 26, 1643 in Hamburg ; † November 10, 1697 ibid) was a German lawyer , bailiff in Ritzebüttel , councilor and mayor of Hamburg.

Live and act

After his school education at the learned school of the Johanneum and the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg, Schaffshausen studied, after he was enrolled at the University of Rostock in June 1658, from 1663 jurisprudence at the University of Helmstedt , where he in 1666 under Enoch glasses (1628-1668) a Disputation held. The following year he received his doctorate in law from the University of Basel . After completing his studies, he traveled to Italy, France and the Netherlands.

On March 17, 1677, Schaffshausen was elected councilor in Hamburg and became a bailiff in Ritzebüttel that same year. The bailiff of the Hamburg outpost was elected for six years, but the next year Schaffshausen was sent to the councilor and later mayor Heinrich Meurer to the peace congress after the Dutch war in Nijmegen . Here he successfully represented the interests of Hamburg and the other Hanseatic cities , which were laid down in an article of the Peace of Nijmegen .

During the unrest surrounding Hieronymus Snitger (1648–1686) and Cord Jastram (1634–1686) Schaffshausen traveled in 1685 with the councilor and later mayor Hieronymus Hartwig Moller (1641–1702) to the imperial court in Vienna to resolve the disputes between the Hamburg citizenship and the Hamburg Council to explain. Here both were publicly insulted and attacked by the Cellisches Hofrat and envoy Asche Christoph von Marenholtz (1645–1713). Marenholtz then fell out of favor with Emperor Leopold I (1640–1705) and had to end his diplomatic career. Moller and Schaffshausen did not return to Hamburg until Denmark attacked Hamburg on August 26, 1686, but this attack could be repulsed with the support of the Cellern and after the troublemakers Snitger and Jastram had been executed on October 4, 1686.

During his stay in Vienna, Schaffshausen acquired an Arabic manuscript of the Koran and took it with him to Hamburg. The orientalist and chief pastor at the main church Sankt Katharinen in Hamburg Abraham Hinckelmann (1652–1695) had this manuscript printed in 1694 in Latin and Arabic. It is the very first full printed edition of the Koran.

On July 22, 1690, Schaffshausen was elected mayor as the successor to the late Heinrich Meurer. He held this office until his death. Peter von Lengerke (1651–1709) succeeded him as mayor. A mayor's penny was minted on Schaffshausen's death .

As the owner of the large Comitive , Count Christian Wilhelm von Schwarzburg appointed Schaffshausen to the imperial court palatinate count in 1696 .

family

Schaffshausen was a son of the Saxon-Lauenburg privy councilor and Chancellor Nicolaus Schaffshausen (1599-1657) from his second marriage in 1640 with Elisabeth Wetken (1621-1692), daughter of the licensed Erasmus Wetken (1589-1639).

Schaffshausen's half-brother from his father's first marriage to Anna Elisabeth Beckmann († 1637), daughter of Wittenberg professor Lucas Beckmann (1571-1624), was the Hamburg councilor Lucas Conrad Schaffshausen (1624-1657).

Of his other brothers, Johann Wilhelm Schaffshausen († 1711) was major in the Hamburg garrison and in 1694 married Anna Catharina geb. Wetken, widow of Hieronymus Snitger, who was executed in 1686. Another brother Julius Hinrich Schaffshausen (1647-1715) was first council secretary, later council syndicus and councilor in Hamburg.

On February 16, 1674, Schaffshausen married Agatha Beckmann, daughter of Barthold Beckmann (1621–1672) and great-granddaughter of the mayor Barthold Beckmann (1549–1622). Of the children, Nicolaus Lucas Schaffshausen (1677–1747) became Hamburg council secretary and protonotary, Anna Catharina (1674–1729) married councilor Henning Lochau (1664–1722) in 1693 and Margaretha Elisabeth in 1714 the council syndicate Johann Schlueter (1682–1760).
