Paul Schmidt-Roller (born April 23, 1891 in Cainsdorf near Zwickau , † November 8, 1963 in Zwickau) was a German painter , art teacher and textile designer.

Life

From 1905 to 1909 the son of a blacksmith was in training at the Plauen art school. Active as a textile designer until the outbreak of the First World War , the war prevented him from attending the Dresden Art Academy . From 1920 he worked as a freelance painter, from 1930 he worked as a teacher at the Plauen art school and also took up residence there. In 1945 he had to complain about the loss of his house in Plauen and numerous jobs due to the bombing of the Second World War . Since then he has been based in Steinpleis near Werdau .

From 1958 onwards, under the motto “Art helps coal” , artists went on study assignments in regions of the mining and coal processing industries of the GDR . Paul Schmidt-Roller took part in an artist brigade with thirteen artists, including Erhard Zierold , Karl Heinz Jakob , Erika and Edgar Klier , Käthe Walther and Erik Magnus Winnertz , in production and portrait studies of miners at the Martin Hoop hard coal works in Zwickau. The main aim was to present the working people in production in the spirit of socialist realism .
