Paul Schröder (philologist)
Paul Schröder (born February 1, 1844 in Elsterwerda , † October 13, 1915 in Jena ) was a German Semitic , orientalist in the diplomatic service and consul general .
Born in Elsterwerda in southern Brandenburg as the son of the local magistrate there, Schröder attended the Latin secondary school in Halle from 1855 to 1862 . Then studied oriental languages in Halle and Berlin . During his studies in 1863 he became a member of the Frankonia Halle fraternity . In 1867 he received his doctorate in Halle with the dissertation "De linguae Pheniciae proprietatibus".
From 1869 to 1882 and 1885 to 1888 he was an embassy interpreter in Constantinople , in between German consul and then Consul General of the German Empire for Syria in Beirut . Schröder traveled through the Orient, doing geographic and archaeological studies. He dealt in particular with old Semitic epigraphy. In 1871 the Greek Philological Society in Constantinople appointed him a full member. In 1909 Schröder retired and lived in Lichterfelde and Jena , where he died in 1915.
Schröder was considered an outstanding expert in the oriental languages and published his work The Phoenician Language in 1869 . In 1870 and 1873 he stayed to study in Cyprus .
