Paul Schuh (church musician)

Paul Schuh (born June 16, 1910 in Trier ; † January 6, 1969 there ) was a German church musician . He was the cathedral organist and music director at Trier Cathedral .

Live and act

Paul Schuh received his musical training during his high school years in the Trier Cathedral Choir and in the Cathedral Music School with cathedral music director Wilhelm Stockhausen and cathedral organist Ludwig Boslet .

In 1931 he joined the Trier seminary and received the 1936 ordination . Then he was chaplain in Bliesen near St. Wendel and completed a study visit at the Pontifical College of Music in Rome from 1937 to 1941 and was chaplain and organist at the German national church Santa Maria dell'Anima .

In 1941 Paul Schuh became cathedral organist in Trier. From 1946 he headed the Episcopal Church Music School, where he especially gave organ lessons. In 1954 he received his doctorate degree from the University of Cologne with a thesis on Joseph Andreas Anschuez, the founder of the Koblenz Music Institute. phil. PhD . In 1955 he was appointed diocesan president of the Cecilia societies by Bishop Matthias Wehr .

In 1958 he took over the leadership of the cathedral choir and the cathedral music school as cathedral music director. At the same time he became vicar at the Hohen Domkirche and lecturer for Gregorian chant and church music at the theological faculty in Trier .

With the cathedral choir he won first prize at the 1966 International Choir Competition in Montreux .

Paul Schuh's repertoire included around 30 important organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach . He gave organ concerts in Lübeck, Eutin, Regensburg, Cologne, Luxembourg and Holland.
