Paul Schwarzenau (born September 19, 1923 in Hörde ; † November 16, 2006 in Steinfurt ) was a German Protestant theologian and professor of biblical theology .

Life

Paul Schwarzenau studied Protestant theology at the theological school for prisoners of war in Montpellier and in Münster , where he received his doctorate in theology in 1954 . From 1957 he worked as a pastor and in 1971 was appointed professor for Protestant theology and its didactics at the Pädagogische Hochschule Ruhr in Dortmund . From 1980 until his retirement in 1985 he taught at the University of Dortmund .

His work is influenced by the basic ideas of Carl Gustav Jung and his theory of archetypes . For all his idiosyncratic thinking, he can be assigned to the pluralistic theology of religion . Schwarzenau wanted to develop his own religion in the direction of "wholeness" and pointed out deficits in the Christian faith.

Schwarzenau postulated a “sense of unity from the depths of the origins”. His 1993 writing The Post-Christian Age draws on his early books From Totem Pole to Crucifix (1976) and The Greater God (1977). Schwarzenau considered the post-Christian age to be synonymous with the end of traditional Christianities to which the future did not belong, but the much larger kingdom of God , which he considered the central theme of Jesus' sermon, where in the end "God all in all" (1 Cor . will be 15.28), saw.

Schwarzenau was co-editor of the interreligious series Religions in conversation . He also excelled as a poet ( Dearest Faunin; New Insect Amusements or Pompa Diaboli; Song of the Mermaid , all 1996). Based on his pluralistic understanding of religion, Schwarzenau became involved in interreligious dialogue. In 1982 he was a co-founder of the Christian Islamic Society , of which he was a member until his death.
