Wilhelm Ferdinand Paul Wiecke (born October 30, 1862 in Elberfeld , † December 18, 1944 in Blankenburg (Harz) ) was a German actor , director and drama director .

Live and act

As a pupil in the school gate, Paul Wiecke got a role in Sophocles ' Antigone in Greek . He studied art and literature at Munich University .

From 1887 Wiecke appeared at the Weimar court theater , including as Ferdinand in Schiller's Kabale und Liebe . In 1895 Seebach brought him to the Dresden court theater . There Wiecke played Don Karlos , Hamlet , Borkmann and Faust . The Dresdner Schauspiel appointed him in 1919 as its artistic director and a year later as theater director. From 1920 Wiecke also emerged as a director. For example, in 1921, together with Gerhart Hauptmann , he staged his verse drama Indipohdi , which was successfully premiered at the Dresden Schauspielhaus in early 1922. Wiecke not only staged but also played the protagonist Prospero.

Through his commitment to plays by expressionist dramatists such as Ernst Toller's anti-war play Hinkemann , he made himself unpopular with the higher authorities; One of the biggest theater scandals of the Weimar Republic was staged by right-wing circles on January 17, 1924: 800 people distributed among the audience carried out this attack. For example, on his 65th birthday, he was forced to resign against his will, but when he said goodbye he was granted honorary membership due to his merits. After this time he worked for some time as the director of the private comedy theater.

In 1920 Wiecke played King Joseph of Rome in the German film Der gallante König ( August the Strong ) by Alfred Halm .

Ferdinand Dorsch portrayed Paul Wiecke; the picture hangs in the Dresden theater.

The remains of Paul Wiecke were buried in the Tolkewitz urn grove .
