Paul Freiherr von Störck (born August 27, 1850 in Vienna ; † April 28, 1920 ibid) was an Austrian landowner and politician as well as a pioneer of the cooperative system in Austria. From 1889 to 1904 he was a member of the Styrian state parliament . From 1902 to 1919 Störck worked as advocate general for the Raiffeisen Association for the entire Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Life

The son of an officer studied law at the University of Vienna (Dr. iur. 1875) and initially worked in the court service.

In 1881 he acquired the Oberlorenzen estate in Sankt Lorenzen im Mürz Valley , which he expanded into a model agricultural business, particularly in the field of cattle breeding. From 1888 to 1898 he was the deputy mayor of St. Lorenzen and in 1897 was the founding chairman of the local Raiffeisen fund.

Störck founded numerous cooperatives throughout Styria based on the Raiffeisen principle, with the cattle breeding and dairy cooperatives as well as the pension funds, from which today's regional Raiffeisen banks emerged, particularly close to his heart. On Störck's initiative, the Association of Agricultural Cooperatives in Styria was founded in 1898 , and he also served as its President. At the international level, Störck was co-founder and vice-president of the International Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives .

As Advocate General, according to Hans Georg Ruppe , he succeeded "in an incomparable way [...] in balancing the diverging national interests within the agricultural cooperatives". Despite his great efforts, Störck could not prevent the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918/19, when the cooperative association was split up along the new state borders. He was then responsible for the liquidation of the association.

Politically, Paul Freiherr von Störck, who was close to the national-liberal camp, campaigned in particular for the agricultural inheritance law and for the debt relief of farm property.

His grandson Paul Störck was also a cooperative functionary and from 1974 to 1984 chairman of the board of the Austrian cooperative association .
