Paulien van Schaik (born June 7, 1967 in Utrecht ) is a Dutch jazz singer and composer .

Career

Van Schaik studied jazz and pop music, first from 1988 at the Utrecht Conservatory , then in 1994/95 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston . She worked on the Currie Show and other musical theater productions between 1996 and 1998 . With one of her own songs she won second prize as a singer-songwriter and best instrumentalist at the Grote Prijs van Nederland . Paradiso Records released their single If I Were You in 1998 .

Since 1999 she has mainly worked in a duo with bassist Hein van de Geyn . Her debut album Tenderly , which was recorded live at the Baseline Theater in Dordrecht in 1999 and released in 2000, won the Dutch Edison Jazz Audience Award in 2002. She also sang in the Amsterdamse Gospelchor Loud & Proud , which recorded the CD A Song for You with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw .

For the album In Summer (2004) the duo Geyn / Schaik was reinforced by trumpeter Bert Joris ; The string players Yvonne van der Pol and Frans Grapperhaus were added on the Musing album . With this line-up van Schaick also appeared in 2007 at the North Sea Jazz Festival . In 2008, Geyn and Schaick formed a new trio with percussionist Ulas Aksunger, which existed until the bassist moved to South Africa. The basis of the duo in 2011 was the Norwegian bassist Jo Skaansar . Then she was accompanied by Niels Tausk's band The Tausk Force . She continued to perform with the band of Belgian saxophonist Marjan Van Rompay , on whose album Silhouette (2012) she was featured as a guest. She can also be heard on the Nits album dA dA dA . Since 2007 she has been working as a jazz lecturer at the Tilburg Conservatory .
