Paulius Rabikauskas

Paulius Rabikauskas SJ (born December 16, 1920 in Gudžiūnai , Kėdainiai Rajongemeinde , † March 7, 1998 in Rome ) was a Lithuanian Catholic theologian and church historian .

Life

Paulius Rabikauskas attended the Jesuit grammar school in Kaunas and joined the Jesuit religious order in 1938 . From 1942 to 1944 he studied philosophy in Pagryžuvys . After the turmoil of the Second World War, he was able to finish his philosophical and theological studies at the Berchmanskolleg in Pullach from 1944 . He was ordained a priest on July 25, 1948 . In 1949 he obtained a licentiate in theology and from 1951 to 1953 did a doctorate in church history at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . From 1953 to 1955 he studied Latin, palaeography and diplomatics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

From 1955 he was initially a lecturer, from 1961 professor of palaeography and diplomatics at the Gregoriana. He also taught paleography from 1970 to 1973 at the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies . From 1985 to 1991 he was Dean of the Faculty of Church History and from 1975 to 1978 Vice Rector of the Gregorian. He was a professor at the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences and from 1962 to 1965 its secretary.

Paulius Rabikauskas wrote numerous books and scientific papers. From 1975 he was editor of the journal Archivum historiae pontificiae . One focus of his research was diplomacy , especially the papal chancellery.

He has received several awards, including an honorary doctorate from the Pontifical Theological Academy in Krakow . Pope John Paul II appointed him advisor to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 1992 . In 1995 he was made an honorary citizen of Lithuania.
