Paulus Maria Weigele

Paulus Maria Weigele OSB (* on June 5, 1943 in Unterrieden as Josef Weigele ) is a Benedictine abbot and emeritus abbot of Ottobeuren Abbey in the Unterallgäu district in the Free State of Bavaria .

Life

Josef Weigele's father died as a soldier in World War II when he was one year old. Weigele first attended grammar school in Ottobeuren . He later switched to the Rhabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in Sankt Ottilien , which he graduated with the Abitur . In 1963 he entered the Ottobeuren Benedictine Abbey . From 1964 to 1969 he studied philosophy and theology at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg . In 1967 he took his religious vows . In 1969 he was ordained a priest .

From 1969 to 1979 he was director of the Ottobeuren boarding school at the Collegium Rupertinum and religion teacher at the primary and secondary school there. From 1980 he was chaplain of the Ottobeuren Basilica. In 1993 he became parish administrator in Böhen and Ollarzried and from 1996 in Hawangen . Since 2000 he has been vice dean for the Ottobeuren dean's office .

On July 16, 2002, the 22-member convent of Ottobeuren elected him to succeed the abbot Vitalis Altthaler, who had resigned himself after reaching the age limit , as the 65th abbot of Ottobeuren. On July 5, 2009, he celebrated his 40th anniversary as a priest in his home village of Unterrieden. Johannes Schaber became his successor in May 2013 .
