Pavia Tønnes Jørgen Petersen (born December 23, 1904 in Nuuk , † December 21, 1943 in Maniitsoq ) was a Greenlandic writer , poet , painter , translator , musician , catechist and councilor .

Life

Pavia Petersen grew up influenced by music and writing by his father. At the age of 16 he went to Grønland's seminary , which he completed in 1927. Influenced by Danes such as Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig , Jens Christian Hostrup and Hans Vilhelm Kaalund , he began to translate works such as Henrik Ibsen’s Die Wildente , Alexandre Dumas' Sr. The Count of Monte Christo and Grundtvig’s Modermaalet into Greenlandic . He adapted Grundtvig's style in his work Ikíngeigît ( (Two) Friends ). His lyric works were mostly related to nature and often contained tips and advice for the population. He was considered one of the most important poets of his time and thus followed in the footsteps of greats such as Henrik Lund and his father Jonathan. As the first Greenlander, his works received the attention of all Inuit as far as Alaska . In addition to lyrical works, he also wrote a novel called Niuvertorutsip pania ( The Commercial Administrator's Daughter ). Apart from his literary work, he was also a painter and also worked as a catechist in Maniitsoq. He contracted tuberculosis and died in 1943 two days before his 39th birthday. He had been a member of the regional council since 1939, but was unable to attend the 1943 meeting due to his illness and was represented by Albrecht Skifte . Previously, he was chairman of the Maniitsoq Township Council .

Pavia Petersen was the son of Jonathan Petersen (1881-1961) and his first wife Marie Helene Ketura Lynge (1882-1911). In 1928 he married the kindergarten teacher Sofie Karoline Judithe Kreutzmann (1894-1939), the daughter of Jakob Efraim Ananias Kreutzmann (1860-1915) and Marie Karoline Jakobine Euphinia Rosing (1861-1938) in Maniitsoq. After his wife died, in 1940 he married Ane Kristine Rakel Heilmann (1919–?), The daughter of David Hans Lars Heilmann (1889–1960) and Sara Bibiane Ruth Lynge (1889–1976).
