Literary works

"Pandora" magazine, Oct. 15, 1855, No. 134, with the first episode of "Thanos Vlekas"

“The novel, published in Greece in 1855/56, deals with the central problems of the young Greek state that was founded in 1830 after independence from the Ottoman Empire. It is considered to be the first socially critical novel in Greek literature. Using the example of the story of the unequal brothers Thanos and Tassos, the author shows problems and difficulties that in some cases still exist today. For example the unjust distribution of land, the disadvantage of the lower classes, the legal uncertainty, the bloated administrative apparatus, one-sided tax burden, everyday corruption ("fakelakia"), a lack of citizenship and favoritism. "

Other works

Kalligas' published works are very extensive. In addition to his legal treatises, he was also a passionate author of numerous essays and studies on historical events (including the English Civil War , Byzantine court ceremonies, the Nika uprising and the Council of Florence ). He also helped found the literary magazine Pandora and translated Leopold von Ranke's work “The Venetians in Morea: 1685-1715” into Greek.
