The United States U-23 national soccer team is a selection team of American soccer players. It is subject to the United States Soccer Federation.
The main task of the team is to qualify for the Olympic football tournament , which takes place every four years and is held as part of the respective Summer Olympic Games .
history
Since the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, only players under the age of 23 are allowed to take part in an Olympic tournament. In 1996, this rule was amended to allow a maximum of three older players to compete.
For this reason, the U-23 national team of the USA was brought into being before the 1992 Olympics. At the local soccer tournament , the team reached third place in the group stage and was eliminated.
A team was also put together for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. This was trained by Bruce Arena , who was then the coach of DC United . Here, too, they only achieved third place in the group stage.
The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney were all the more successful . The coach was the former English soccer player Clive Charles, who looked after the team from 1996 to 2003. After a first place in the group stage and a quarter-final victory over Japan, the U-23 team reached the semi-finals. there, however, they lost to Spain 3-1. In the ensuing game for the bronze medal, the team lost to Chile. The team's top scorer was national player Peter Vagenas.
For the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the US U-23 could not qualify. In the 2004 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament in Mexico, they lost 4-0 in the semi-finals to Mexico. Only the two finalists qualified for the Summer Olympics. The coach was former US international Glenn Myernick .
At the end of 2006, the coach of the US national soccer team Bob Bradley also took over the U-23 team. However, the senior national team assistant at the time, Piotr Nowak , looked after the team for the most part and prepared it for the Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2008 Summer Games. After qualifying, it was only enough for third place in the group stage in Beijing .
For qualification for the 2012 Olympics, the then coach of the college soccer team at the University of Akron , Caleb Porter , took over responsibility for the team. However, the team could not successfully finish the group stage in the qualifying tournament despite a 6-0 opening win against Cuba.
The US national team's assistant coach Andreas Herzog will look after the U-23s for the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics . The association announced this on January 23, 2015.
