Pavlos Tzermias

Pavlos N. Tzermias ( Greek Παύλος Ν. Τζερμιάς ; * May 5, 1925 in Thessaloniki ; † May 13, 2016 in Zurich ) was a Greek - Swiss legal scholar , historian , neo-Greekist , journalist and publicist .

Life

Pavlos Tzermias was born as the son of the Cretan lawyer and politician Nikolaos Tzermias. He studied law at the University of Athens and from 1949 to 1964 at the University of Zurich and was admitted to the bar of the Canton of Zurich . From 1967 to 1995 he worked as the Greece correspondent for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . At the same time he directed a Greek-language broadcast on SRG from 1970 to 1990 . He also taught Neo-Greek and Byzantine Studies from 1965 to 1995 at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland and from 1984 to 1992 at the University of Zurich.

As a publicist, Tzermias has helped shape the image of Greece in the German-speaking area “[like] hardly anyone else”. His overall accounts of modern Greek history and the history of Cyprus have long been part of the standard German-language works.

Tzermias was married to a Swiss woman from 1955. In 1968 he was naturalized in Zurich . From 2000 he was a corresponding member of the “Section for Ethics and Political Sciences” of the Academy of Athens .
