Peteetneet Museum in Payson

Payson is a city in Utah County in the US state of Utah , United States , with 18,294 inhabitants (as of 2010). The urban area has a size of 22.5 km².

Payson is part of the Provo - Orem metropolitan area , an area with approximately 527,000 inhabitants (as of 2010).

The first settlers in Payson came in 1850, they were Mormon people . Originally this place was called Peteetneet Creek , named after the local chief Peteetneet of the Ute Indians . The name was later changed by Brigham Young , a Mormon church leader who was the first governor of the Utah Territory . The city was officially founded on January 21, 1853. In 1872, the Payson Tabernacle , a church building that could also be used as a meeting place for the community, was inaugurated by Wilford Woodruff . A year later, a Payson high school was established and an opera house was built in 1883. In the last few years of the 19th century , Payson had a company making harnesses for horses. Sugar beet was processed in the Payson area from 1913 to 1926.

Mayor Rick Moore has been in charge of Payson's administration since 2009. He was the first so-called write-in candidate (a candidate whose name was not printed on the ballot) to win a mayoral election in the state of Utah against an incumbent incumbent. The mayor and the five city ​​council members who support him are elected for a term of four years.

The Scottish Festival and Highland Games are held annually in Payson in July .

The Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center is located in the former school building from 1901. A statue of Chief Peteetneet can be seen in front of the museum . In the museum exhibits on the history of the place are exhibited.
