Pearse Lacey

Michael Pearse Lacey (born November 26, 1916 in Toronto , Ontario ; † April 2, 2014 there ) was auxiliary bishop in Toronto .

Life

Pearse Lacey entered Augustine's Seminary in Toronto in 1936 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology . He was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Toronto on May 23, 1943 . Then he was, among other things, chaplain of St. Michael's Hospital and from 1959 pastor of the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Etobicoke . In 1966 he became Rector ecclesiae of St. Michael Toronto Cathedral . Pope Paul VI awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on September 13, 1967 . He was chaplain and director of the Christian Family Movement and vice-president of the council of priests . From 1965 to 1970 he was chairman of the Liturgy Commission of the Archdiocese of Toronto. From 1972 to 1974 he was a member of the board of directors of the diocesan school administration and from 1975/76 he was vice-president of the national priestly council.

On May 3, 1979, Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Toronto and titular bishop of Diano . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Toronto, Gerald Emmett Carter , on June 21 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Philip Francis Pocock , Archbishop Emeritus of Toronto, and Aloysius Matthew Ambrozic , Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto. Lacey has been named Episcopal Vicar for the Western Region of the Archdiocese and Director for the Priests, based in St. Patrick, Mississauga; until 1993 he was also vicar general .

On May 31, 1993, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.
