Kaub gauge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kauber gauge is the most important gauge for Rhine navigation on the Middle Rhine , especially for the route between Koblenz and Bingen am Rhein .

location

The level is a few meters below the Kauber Pfalz at Rhine kilometer 546.3 on the right side of the river at the level of the center of Kaub with the Kaub ferry , mast and former pilot station .

history

The oldest gauge on the Rhine between Bingen am Rhein and Mannheim shortly before the start of the Rhine breakthrough through the slate mountains is the Erfeld gauge from 1797, today on the Altrhein on the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue . In Kaub, measurements were first made with a staff level in 1856, still in Nassau decimal feet. The level tower was built by Prussia and opened on May 18, 1905 with a writing level and the display of the current water level via a mechanical large indicator, a level clock (electrical since 1951). Since 1967 the level has been equipped with remote data transmission , since 1968 with a measured value announcement device, and in 1973 a punched tape level was set up. In the course of the modernization in 2011, paper recording was dispensed with and a second measuring device (redundant) was installed instead. The measured values are transmitted to the hydrological data center in so-called push mode .

meaning

For navigation on the Rhine to destinations above Koblenz, the Kaub gauge is of central importance as a calculation variable. According to this, the possible loading depth and thus the immersion depth of the ship is measured at low tide for cargo shipping. For example, you load 80 to 120 cm draft at the Kaub gauge depending on the willingness to take risks and the rising or falling water level.
