The Pegnitz spring is a typical karst spring in Franconian Switzerland in the city of Pegnitz . It is located at an altitude of 425 meters near the Schlossberg. The flow of the spring pot gives the river Pegnitz its name.

description

The Pegnitz actually rises in the Lindenhardt Forest as Fichtenohe , which flows towards the city of Pegnitz. It has already covered a stretch of 22 kilometers, where the significantly less watery draining stream of the Pegnitzquelle flows into the Fichtenohe. From this point on the brook is called Pegnitz.

The pouring of the spring pot used to be so strong that the Zaußenmühle could be operated there. This was built around 1500, but destroyed in the Thirty Years War . In 1710 the mill was rebuilt as a half-timbered house. At that time the Pegnitz spring was also responsible for supplying the city with clean drinking water . The mean spring discharge is now around 5 liters per second; however, it is heavily dependent on precipitation .

In the event of heavy rain and the associated increased transport of sediment , turbidity collapses in the karst water of the Pegnitz spring can be observed.

Today there is a fountain in the spring pond . Fish such as trout live in the crystal clear water .

The Pegnitz spring almost completely dried up in the dry year 2015.
