Pelargonium carnosum belonging to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae). The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1755 as Geranium carnosum .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The species grows as a succulent, branched shrub with a thick, subterranean hypocotyl area and reaches heights of up to 120 centimeters. The fleshy leaves are bipinnate and furrowed along the midrib, which often persists for some time.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is branched into several partial inflorescences . These each have 2 to 8 individual flowers. The five obovate petals are white, greenish yellow or pinkish red in color. The upper two petals are slightly larger than the lower three and only slightly bent back. Furthermore, the two upper ones are provided with purple-colored markings and designed with eyelets at the base. There are five fertile stamens . The pollen is colored orange.

Occurrence

Pelargonium carnosum comes from Namibia and the South African provinces of the North Cape , Western Cape and Eastern Cape .

Taxonomy

The first description as Geranium carnosum was in 1755 by Carl von Linné . Synonyms are Geranium ferulaceum Burm.f. (1759), Pelargonium ferulaceum (Burm.f.) Willd. (1800), Pelargonium mammulosum J.C. Wendl. (1810), Otidia burmanniana Eckl. & Zeyh. (1835), Pelargonium ferulaceum var. Polycephalum Harv. (1860), Pelargonium sisoniifolium Baker (1869) and Pelargonium eberlanzii R.Knuth (1933, nom. Illeg., ICBN -Article 53.1).

It belongs to the Otidia (Lindl.) Harv section. It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.

Pelargonium carnosum is a very variable species and therefore possibly includes more than one species ( Pelargonium parviflorum J.C. Wendl. (1810), Pelargonium brevipetalum N.E.Br. (1909), Pelargonium polycephalum R.Knuth (1912)).
