Leonard Pennario

Leonard Pennario (born July 9, 1924 in Buffalo , New York , † June 27, 2008 in La Jolla , California ) was an American pianist and composer .

At the age of twelve he played Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Eugene Goossens . Pennario memorized the concert within a week. He studied piano with Isabelle Vengerova and Olga Steeb and composition with Ernst Toch at the University of Southern California .

During World War II , he served with US Army Air Forces in China , Burma and India . After the war he still appeared in uniform with the New York Philharmonic in Carnegie Hall on November 17, 1943, under the direction of Artur Rodziński , and performed Franz Liszt's 1st Piano Concerto . In the 1960s he formed a piano trio with the violinist Jascha Heifetz and the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky .

Leonard Pennario has recorded over 60 long-playing records with works from the 19th and 20th centuries. The sound recordings of George Gershwin , Sergei Wassiljewitsch Rachmaninow , Miklós Rózsa , Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Sergei Prokofjew brought him greatest successes .

He died as a result of Parkinson's disease at the age of 83 years.
