Percy Ashton (born March 28, 1909 in Bolton-on-Dearne , † March 19, 1989 in Hyson Green , Nottingham ) was an English football player . The goalkeeper played 176 second division appearances for Nottingham Forest in the 1930s .

Career

Ashton was signed in December 1928 by second division Nottingham Forest from West Melton Excelsior , a club with which he played in the Sheffield Amateur League . Because of the commitment, Forest officials decided in January 1930 to take over the debts of the amateur club. In the following years Ashton was the third goalkeeper behind the more experienced Len Langford and Arthur Dexter . Ashton made his competitive debut on September 15, 1930 in a 3-0 win against Stoke City , only three more competitive appearances were added to the start of the 1933/34 season when he was promoted to the goalkeeper. Ashton, described as "tall of stature and courage," kept this role for most of the time until the game was closed due to World War II and completed a total of 176 league and nine cup games.

In terms of sport, the time for the club was very mixed. In the league they placed - apart from the 1934/35 season when the ninth place in the table was occupied - only just above the relegation ranks; and in the FA Cup stood out a knockout round 16 in 1934/35, in the 3-0 defeat in the replay against Burnley FC Ashton made mistakes with two goals conceded. Ashton had one of his weakest appearances on the last day of the 1937/38 season against FC Barnsley , when a relegated team decided in a direct duel. Ashton blundered on both goals conceded, Davy Martin scored the 2-2 equalizer for Forest shortly before the end of the match, which kept the class with a 0.002 better goal quotient.

Ashton's professional career came to an end with the outbreak of war. In the war-related substitute competitions he made 13 appearances in the 1939/40 season, but only appeared again - and for the last time - at the beginning of the 1943/44 season in two games for Forest. He was also active as a guest player at Mansfield Town (1940-1942, 29 games) and Notts County (1942/43, 3 games). The outbreak of war also prevented a charity game promised to him from being played; instead, he received a payment of £ 200 in July 1943.

From the beginning of 1947 Ashton appeared for the Midland League playing Grantham FC . For a game against the reserves of Nottingham Forest, he also returned to the City Ground . With Grantham, Ashton qualified in the FA Cup 1947/48 for the first main round, in which they failed despite "several great saves" by Ashton at Stockton FC with 1: 2. Ashton was a regular goalkeeper until the beginning of the 1949/50 season and made a total of 104 competitive games for Grantham.
