Peregrine Osborne, 2nd Duke of Leeds ( 1659 - June 25, 1729 ) was a British aristocrat ( peer ) from the late 17th century and early 18th century.

Life

Peregrine Osborne was the second son of Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds , (1631-1712) and Lady Bridget Bertie (1629-1704), a daughter of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey (1608-1666). After his older brother Edward Osborne, Viscount Latimer (1655-1689) died, Peregrine Osborne became his father's new Heir Apparent . As such he led 1689 to 1694 the courtesy title Earl of Danby and 1694 to 1712 the courtesy title Marquess of Carmarthen .

In 1673 his father gave him the Scottish title of 2nd Viscount Osburne , of Dunblane in the County of Perth.

Since 1677 Osborne was for the constituency of Berwick-upon-Tweed member of the House of Commons , from 1679 for the constituency of Corfe Castle. In 1682 he married Bridget Hyde, the only daughter of Sir Thomas Hyde, 2nd Baronet, of Aldbury (1594-1665). Their children together were Mary (1688-1722), William Henry (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne (1691-1731), who would later become the 3rd Duke of Leeds .

In 1689 Osborne was again a Member of Parliament, this time for the constituency of York . In 1690 he was given the title of 2nd Baron Osborne , a subordinate title of his father, by a special royal resolution ( Writ of Acceleration ) , so that he became a member of the English House of Lords . In the following years he made a career in the Royal Navy , where he rose to Vice-Admiral . When his father died in 1712, he inherited the title of 2nd Duke of Leeds , 2nd Marquess of Carmarthen , 2nd Earl of Danby , 2nd Viscount Latimer and 3rd Baronet , of Kiveton. From 1713 to 1714 Osborne was Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire . Osborne died in 1729 at the age of about 70.
