The vice admiral is a naval admiralty rank in most states.

The Vice Admiral is one of the ranks of the Bundeswehr for naval uniform wearers . The legal basis is the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and uniforms of soldiers and the Soldiers Act .
Positions
The vice admiral is mostly employed in prominent top service positions such as deputy inspector general , inspector of the armed forces base , inspector of the navy and as their deputy or department head in the ministry . A use as a fleet commander in one of the NATO command staff is also conceivable .
Salutation
In the central guideline A2-2630 / 0-0-3 "Military forms and celebrations of the Bundeswehr" (formerly ZDv 10/8), the salutation of all naval uniform wearers (except the corresponding medical officers ) from the rank group of the generals is set as "Mr. Admiral".
Rank badge
The rank badges of the Vice Admiral show a hand-width, above two medium- width sleeve stripes on both lower sleeves .
Others
The rank designation of air force and army uniform carriers of the same rank is Lieutenant General . With regard to authority, appointment , pay , the subordinate and superior ranks, vice admirals and lieutenants general are treated equally.

French armed forces
In the French Navy corresponding vice-amiral the rear admiral ; the vice- admiral would be the vice-amiral d'escadre . The conversion of the French admiral ranks is not clear, however, since according to the star counting the "one-star admiral" OF-6 ( flotilla admiral ) is not provided.
More modern armed forces
The badges of rank for vice admirals usually contain three admiral stars. However, deviations from this are possible and are shown as examples below.
- There are vice admirals with an admiral star: in Iraq, in Azerbaijan, and in North Korea.
- Vice admiral with two admiral stars: in Russia, Bangladesh, China, Cuba, Iran, and Mexico.
- Vice admiral with four admiral stars: in Turkey.

The Vice-Admiral was the second lowest rank in the People's Navy in the Admiral Rank and corresponded to the Lieutenant General of the National People's Army . The rank badge consisted of shoulder pieces with a navy blue background and a braided gold-silver cord on which two pentagonal silver-colored general stars ("pimples") were attached. Shoulder pieces were worn with all parts of the uniform. The sleeve badge consisted of a wide yellow stripe and two other simple stripes. Above it was a five-pointed star, inside of which was the coat of arms of the GDR. In contrast to all other German naval forces, the sleeve badges only covered about 40% of the sleeve circumference. The admiral's collar tabs showed a gold-colored tendril that had an angle of 90 ° at the lower end. The cap badge corresponded to that of the Vice Admiral of the German Navy.

- ↑ In the ZDv 37/10, in addition to the form of sleeve badges described in the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers , corresponding (i.e. similarly designed) shoulder badges for naval uniform wearers are described. It is noticeable that in the case of admirals, the hand-width sleeve stripes (5.2 cm) of the sleeve badges on the epaulets are only half as wide (2.6 cm). All other weft widths for all other ranks are otherwise always the same width for sleeve and shoulder badges.
