Pereskia horrida is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet horrida means: rough, shaggy, wild, staring.

description

Pereskia horrida grows as a shrub or small tree and reaches heights of 2 to 6 meters, with the outermost shoots often growing in a zigzag . The roots are spindle-shaped to almost spherical. The indistinct stalked leaves are thick-fleshed. The elliptical to obovate leaf blade is 1.5 to 4 inches long and 1 to 2.5 inches wide. The indistinct nerve of the leaf blade shows up to two lateral nerves. The midrib protrudes from the bottom. Long, white hairs often arise from the areoles on older shoots . The very unevenly long thorns are 1 to 4 centimeters long. On the branches there are one to four straight thorns per areole. Up to 10 or more thorns per areole, which are often twisted, are formed on the trunk.

The flowers are solitary and terminal or appear laterally and form inflorescences of two to six flowers. The cloudy red, orange-red, brownish orange or white flowers reach a diameter of 5 to 15 millimeters. The soft fleshed fruits are initially green and turn black when ripe . They have a diameter of 5 to 6 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskia horrida is common in Peru , the Amazon , Cajamarca and La Libertad regions at altitudes of 450 to 580 meters.

It was first described as Cactus horridus in 1823 by Karl Sigismund Kunth . Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle placed the species in the genus Pereskia in 1828 . A synonym is Rhodocactus horridus (Kunth) FMKnuth .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Pereskia horrida subsp. horrida
  • Pereskia horrida subsp. rauhii (Backeb.) Ostolaza

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
