Perimeter ( Russian Периметр ) is a real-time strategy game (RTS) from Kaliningrad- based Russian game developer K-D Lab . The game was released on May 21, 2004 in Russia by 1C and worldwide by Codemasters . In August 2006 an expansion with the title Perimeter: Emperor's Testament ( Russian Периметр: Завет Императора ) was released, which can also be run independently of the main game .

The successor Perimeter 2: New Earth ( Russian Периметр 2: Новая Земля ) was published on February 13, 2009 by Strategy First , but could not build on the success of the first part.

Game content

Perimeter takes place in several fictional worlds and the player takes on the role of a legate . He controls the colony under him in a given world and has to build a new center of power there. When settling, the player may meet another of the three races or a fourth party, the so-called Scourge. To defend yourself, the player builds factories for nanobot units and laboratories for researching new technologies. If a technology has been researched and enough nano-units are available, the player can build the units into nanomorphic and thus stronger units.

One of the special features of the game highlighted in the receptions is the possibility of destroying the terrain and shaping it through terraforming ; an ability that the player must use strategically. The ability to convert troops into other types directly on the battlefield is described as particularly important. In the game, this ability is explained using nanotechnology and accordingly called "nano morphing ".

people

The Exodus are a religious people in search of the Promised Land .

The Harkbark reject religion and want to return to old earth. You have found a way to create and control Scourge - enemy creatures.

The Empire is a warlike people who reject religion as well as the ideas of the promised land and ancient earth and who seek the creation of a more developed, cybernetic humanity.

building

The base is the home of the community, which is the last great hope of human survival. Here is also the spiral that brings the alpha and omega portals to life. The first group of combat units is controlled from the base. Each additional group requires an additional command center.

The Alpha Portal leads back to the Old Earth on the chain of worlds. It hovers in orbit over the planet. The Omega portal leads to the next world of the chain. Once built, it's practically indestructible.

Energy reactors get their energy from the ground. In order to function, they must be connected to each other and to the base. The reactors form an energy network that charges the ground. All other buildings must be erected in the charged areas. Energy transmitters provide remote connections between reactors, but do not produce any energy themselves. Energy collectors enable the storage of additional energy beyond the capacity of the base.

Soldiers , officers and technicians are each produced in their own factories. Various laboratories enable troops to be converted into nanomorph units with extended capabilities, for example with additional weapons such as lasers , guided missiles or grenades, or extended movement options such as underground or air locomotion.

In addition, gun emplacements can be erected against air, ground and underground mobile units.

Awards

At the largest Russian game developer conference KRI ( Russian Конференция Разработчиков Игр ), which has been held annually since 2003 , the game won the first prizes for the best game design and the best PC game even before its release .

Several specialist magazines, especially in Russia, but also abroad, for example, expressed their “editorial recommendation” or named Perimeter as the game of the month.

reception

The first part of the perimeter was received inconsistently by the trade press. On average, it scores 77 percentage points. The extension Perimeter: Emperor's Testament as well as the second part were rated more uniformly but also worse (67 and 51% respectively).

Most gaming magazines and online magazines especially praise the - literally - " innovations " that Perimeter introduces and with which it "brings a breath of fresh air into a genre that needs it" ( GameSpot , 8.2 out of 10 points). The British PC gamer, for example, thinks that the game, with its innovations, is able to "throw most traditional real-time strategy games out of the pool" (9/10 points). The German online magazine Gamesmania says, “There hasn't been anything more original in the genre of real-time strategy for years, and neither has that much tactical depth”, but warns of a high level of difficulty (85%).

Some criticisms are made of “the absolutely lousy mission design and the confused story, which is boring after a few hours of play at the latest” ( Gamers.at , 77%).

References to other titles

The racing and role-playing game Vangers ( Russian Вангеры ), also developed by KD Lab and published in 1998, is set in the same fictional universe as Perimeter .

With Maelstrom , another real-time strategy game (RTS) was published in February 2007 by the same development team, but under the company name KD Vision or KDV Games for short , a trademark founded by KD Lab in October 2004 . 1C and Codemasters also act as publishers . With an average rating of 59%, Maelstrom could not build on the success of Perimeter either .
