history

KTM-19 in Perm

The tram in the city opened on November 7, 1929. Like most railways in Russia, it is built in the Russian broad gauge of 1,524 mm. However, the plans for the railway date from the time before the First World War . The extensions in the years after the opening adhered very precisely to these original plans.

The first line led from today's terminus, Sad Sverdlova, via Rasguljajstrasse and Leninastrasse to the intersection with today's Kujbyshevastrasse . Used cars from Moscow were initially used . After the network had grown steadily over the years, construction activities before the Second World War ended in 1940 with the construction of the route to the Kalinin works .

In addition to passenger transport, the railway also took on the transport of goods. Until the Second World War, freight traffic played a rather subordinate role, although numerous companies had connections to the railway. There were also some special cars and an electric locomotive for transporting goods. During the war, the freight network was expanded and numerous new connections were made. Another task was the transport of the sick and wounded. For this purpose, there were converted passenger cars for patient transport. After the end of the war, the transport of goods and ambulances was given up, the connections dismantled and the vehicles abolished. Today nothing reminds of this function of the railway.

New cars were purchased for the first time in 1948 . These were again used vehicles from Moscow. After oil was found in the area in the 1950s , the petroleum combine and a new residential complex were built, which were opened up by the railways from October 25, 1957.

At the end of the 1970s, the network had reached its greatest extent of 140 kilometers. With the beginning of perestroika in the 1980s, the railway ran into financial problems. For example, rapid transit line 14 had to be closed. On May 31, 1988, the railway was incorporated into the Permawtotrans bus company . Today the network has a length of 129.1 kilometers and is used by twelve lines. It is true that route extensions are often discussed, especially before elections, but none of them has yet been implemented.
