Peschtera [ ˈpɛʃtɛrɐ ] ( Bulgarian Пещера , German cave - but then with the emphasis on the last syllable) is a city in Bulgaria . It is 450 m above sea level on the border between the Upper Thracian Valley and the western Rhodope Mountains , 125 km southeast of Sofia , 40 km southwest of Plovdiv , 20 km south of Pazardzhik and 15 km north of Batak . The city has 16,189 inhabitants (as of December 2016).

history

Peristera (fortress)

Remains of forts, bridges, roads and objects from the Thracian era have been found in the vicinity of Peschtera . Because of this, it is assumed that the settlement dates back to the 4th century BC. Existed. In the period of the Bulgarian Revival (Възраждане), crafts and construction flourished. The most impressive buildings from this period are the churches "St. Petka" (1710), "St. Dimitar" (1825) and "St. Bogorodiza" (1864), the first school from 1848, the clock tower, built from 1650 to 1710 u. a. Today there are around 40 objects in Peschtera that have been designated architectural monuments of regional importance and a historical museum.

Surroundings

In the village of Padilowo, 6 km from Peschtera, there is a museum exhibition showing the participation of the inhabitants in the April uprising of 1876. 15 km away from the city is the reservoir of the Batak dam and the recreation area "St. Konstantin". Here you can go swimming and fishing in summer and skiing in winter. Not far from Peschtera is the " Sneschanka " cave , in which the remains of the Thracian Besi ethnic group from the Bronze Age were found. This cave can be visited.
