Peter Jozzeppi "Pete" Burns (born August 5, 1959 in Bebington , Cheshire , † October 23, 2016 in London ) was a British pop singer, songwriter and television personality. In the 1980s he became known as the singer of the new wave band Dead or Alive .

Life

Pete Burns, who was discharged from school early, made his first musical contacts by working in an alternative record store, which at the time was a meeting place for young musicians. The extravagant and androgynous dressed Burns briefly became the singer of the music group Mystery Girls . He later founded the dark wave formation Nightmares in Wax , which would later be renamed Dead or Alive . With a changing image and a new sound, away from Gothic and post-punk to pop music suitable for disco clubs, the band made their breakthrough in the international charts in the mid-1980s.

After the short-term commercial success of Dead or Alive had waned, Burns devoted himself to his solo career in the early 1990s, which, however, hardly produced any noteworthy recordings. Under the pseudonym International Chrysis , he published the David Bowie cover Rebel Rebel in 1994 , which reached number 76 on the British pop charts . The song was later re-released on the Dead-or-Alive album Nukleopatra (1995). Ten years later he managed to return to the top 100 of the British charts with the song Jack and Jill Party produced by the Pet Shop Boys .

In the 1990s, Burns had a few cosmetic operations that changed his appearance significantly. This earned him media coverage, as well as ridicule and malice. He dressed and acted feminine too. Burns later described his operations as unsuccessful, but successfully marketed himself as a freak or trash star.

Burns' participation in the British version of the reality show Celebrity Big Brother brought him a comeback in 2006, as a result of which he appeared in numerous television shows and celebrity specials in various TV formats in the UK. In the same year his autobiography Freak Unique and the television documentary Pete Burns Unspun appeared . In October 2007 Burns got his own reality TV show on Sky Living under the title Pete's PA (English: Pete's Personal Assistant ) . The ten episodes of the show ran until December 2007.

In 2009 he sued his cosmetic surgeon for a failed lip augmentation. Burns had to undergo multiple operations to correct the procedure. He was awarded £ 450,000 in compensation for pain and suffering. Burns declared himself bankrupt in 2015 after unable to pay the rent on his apartment.

Pete Burns died on October 23, 2016 at the age of 57 from complications from a heart attack .
