Peter Wiechenthaler Hut, south view

The Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte is an Alpine Club hut of the Austrian Alpine Club at 1707  m above sea level. A. on the southwestern edge of the Steinerne Meer high above Saalfelden. It is located in the Salzburger Land in the Berchtesgaden Alps at the foot of the Persailhorn on the back of the Kienalkopf, in the area of ​​the Leogang der Saalforste (forest district 13 Buchweißbach). It is a popular excursion destination for hikers and day visitors, but also an important base for mountaineers, who from here can undertake challenging via ferratas as well as numerous summit climbs and crossings in the Stone Sea.

History

The Peter Wiechenthaler Hut was built in 1924/26 on the initiative of the master mason Peter Wiechenthaler (1859–1927) from Saalfelden. The hut is usually open from the end of May to the end of September / beginning of October. It has 14 beds and 40 mattresses. The hut is closed in winter , up to 6 ski tourers can stay overnight in the winter room (only accessible with the section's AV lock).

  • From the Kaltenbachtal car park ( 850  m ) via Metzger-Steinalm and Persailfoissel, medium, walking time: 4 hours.
