Peter August Poelchau

Peter August Poelchau (* August 16 . Jul / 28. August  1803 greg. In Sunzel , Governorate of Livonia , † December 15 jul. / 27. December  1874 greg. In Riga ) was a Baltic German theologian and Lutheran bishop .

Life

Born in Livonia, Poelchau attended the Imperial Lyceum in Riga from 1817 and studied theology at the University of Dorpat from 1822 to 1824 . Here he was one of the founders of the Fraternitas Rigensis . After working as a private tutor in Riga, he continued his studies from 1826 at the University of Halle . In Tübingen he received his doctorate. phil. In 1828 he became pastor-adjunct in Riga, in 1831 deacon at the Riga Cathedral , in 1838 archdeacon at the Petri Church , in 1843 senior pastor at the cathedral and in 1848 senior pastor at the Petri Church. From 1849 he also acted as superintendent and vice-president of the Rigas city consistory and the school council. In March 1874 he was appointed bishop, but died in December of that year.

He was married to Charlotte Dorothea, b. Hielbig. The pedagogue and historian Arthur Poelchau was a son of the couple.
